Alotau is the Capital of Milne Bay province with a population of more than 16,000 inhabitants. Alotau became the provincial Capital in 1969, when it was shifted from Samarai Island. Did you know that Alotau is the only town in whole of Milne Bay province that covers 14,345km2 of land. Thousands of people flood into Alotau during weekends and paydays and so it can be very busy.
There are 48 different languages spoken here in Alotau and through out the province.
Main Languages spoken in Alotau Town Include; English, ( English is taught in All subjects at School ), pigin English ( Tok Pisin ), Hiri Motu, Tawala and Bwanabwana language.
The only way you can get to Alotau is by Boat or Plane. There are no connecting roads to PortMoresby because of the Owen Stanely ranges.
Therefore it is very safe with friendly people. However, theres always a bad onion among all the onions, and so we must use our common sense and avoid places or situations where trouble might happen.
Most people live in the villages without electricity and television as a result most of us don't even know whats going on around the world, the country or the new president. Except if we grab a news paper if we ever come into town. Which some of us come to town only twice every year a result of Distance--Decay. The red stain is caused from chewing betel-nut.
Betel-nut chewing is a combination of three items.
1- Lime ( lime is taken from stag horn corals. The corals are Harvested and burned to make white lime powder.
2- Mustard seed
3- Betel- nut ( Known as Areca Palm grown in most tropical countries.
Lime, Mustard and Betelnut chewed together Causes a chemical reaction resulting in red stains all over the mouth.
Betel-nut is a drug almost 99% of the population chew betel nut as a part of the culture.
Its Appetite suppressant, and gives you a high.
Sadly, many citizens suffer Oral Cancer a result from chewing betel-nut.
